Best Management Practices

Best Management Practices (BMPs) are actions that protect the environment during any type of land use that disturbs the ground surface. Why is this important?

Erosion and sedimentation can be very harmful to stream, pond and lake habitats for native wildlife and amphibians, freshwater fish and their food sources. Tiny particles of earth can harm fish gills, obstructing their ability to breathe. Sediments can also become deposited on gravel beds which provide habitats for fish spawning and insects to thrive. If the food source that supports larger fish is destroyed, then this will affect the life cycle of the fish in the body of water as well.
