FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q. How does Newfound Lake rank in size for NH?

A. Newfound lake is the fifth largest lake in New Hampshire (in terms of surface area, 4105.9 acres) next to Lake Winnipesaukee (44585.2 acres), Lake Umbagog (7849.8 acres), Squam Lake (6764.4 acres) and Lake Winnisquam (4264.2 acres). Winnisquam is only about 100 acres larger than Newfound and depending upon the source of information, it is possible that Newfound Lake will rank ahead of Winnisquam.

Q. Is Newfound Lake the cleanest lake in the country?

A. From 1996 DES data, New Hampshire Lakes and Ponds Inventory Volume XII, lists Newfound Lake as the 16th clearest lake in New Hampshire. The data collected by DES were collected at different times of the year and in different years so a direct comparison among lakes is impossible. During one of our historical UNH field visits to Newfound Lake, we did see down 15 meters if that is any help. Other lakes where we have historical readings of 15 meters include Merrymeeting Lake (New Durham), Lake Winnipesaukee (in the deeper open water area of the lake) and I believe in Great East Lake located in Wakefield.

Q. What is the deepest point?
A. 182’deep, at a point east of the ledges on W. Shore Road (depth map)

In terms of deepest lakes, Newfound ranks #1 at 182.0 feet, followed by Winnipesaukee (180.1 feet), Winnisquam (173.8 feet), Silver Lake in Madison (164.0 feet), and the First Connecticut Lake (163.0 feet). Local residents make claims that some lakes are deeper than listed above (i.e. Winnipesaukee has a deep hole that exceeds 200 feet) but we do not know of documented information that validate such claims.

Q. How many moorings are on Newfound Lake?

A. In 2006 there were 1067 according to Marine Patrol.

  1. Are there books about Newfound Lake history?
    1. There are several, but we don’t know if they’re in print. You can contact the local Historic Societies, and we’ll be updating this information soon.
