Lake Host

Each year NH Lake Hosts protect New Hampshire’s lakes from invasive species by conducting courtesy boat inspections and educating boaters about the risks invasive aquatic species pose. Since the program began in 2002, Lake Hosts  have prevented approximately 1,600 invasive fragments from entering lakes and rivers. Lake Hosts staff both of Newfound’s public boat launches from Memorial Day to Labor Day and have prevented 28 fragments of invasive plants—including variable milfoil—from being introduced into the lake’s pristine waters. Lake Hosts also collect important data that informs our understanding of the transport of invasive species around the state, the effectiveness of education efforts, and seasonal boat traffic at the boat ramps. Weed Watchers

While it is important to prevent the introduction of invasive plants, early identification of established invasive plants in the lake is the next line of defense. An established colony of an invasive aquatic plants can be almost impossible to eradicate, but if caught early the chances are better. Weed watchers are trained to monitor shoreline plant growth and identify invasive plant colonies.
