Birds live in a world of sound. They use songs to find mates, calls to warn of predators, and the sounds of their young to communicate. But what happens when those sounds are drowned out by traffic, construction, boats, and other human-made noise?

A recent study led by University of Michigan researchers analyzed more than 150 studies involving 160 bird species across six continents and found that human-generated noise can affect birds’ behavior, physiology, and reproduction.

At this Let’s Talk Nature, we’ll explore what scientists are learning about noise pollution and birds—and consider what it might mean here in New Hampshire. How do birds respond to a noisy environment? Which sounds matter most? And can we make our communities quieter places for wildlife?

Join us for this month's Let's Talk Nature discussion as we explore the impacts of noise pollution on migratory birds. Come listen, share your perspective, and join the conversation about thinking bigger when it comes to protecting wildlife and the places they call home.

At each “Let’s Talk Nature” gathering, we share a short article and supplemental materials in advance and come together for an informal, welcoming discussion. Each session stands on its own, and everyone is welcome. No expertise needed. Bring your curiosity and a willingness to listen and share. Drinks and cookies provided.
