What can the sounds of wildlife tell us about the animals that make them? Bioacoustics, an expanding field of science, uses sound and acoustic technology to help researchers understand wildlife populations—including where animals live, how they use their habitat, and when important life stages occur.
Join us for an evening exploring how researchers at the University of New Hampshire are using sound to study two of New Hampshire’s fascinating mammals. Sandesh Lamichhane, a PhD student at UNH, will share how he is using moose vocalizations to better understand their habitat use and movement patterns. Following his presentation, Megan Graham, a Master’s student at UNH, will explain how bat echolocation can help researchers determine when different life stages occur at maternity roosts.

About Sandesh Lamicchane:
Born in the remote hills of western Nepal, mountains and wildlife were part of Sandesh's everyday life. His love for higher altitudes lead him to study snow leopards during his undergraduate and Master’s degree where he tracked Himalayan populations through the mountains. That same curiosity brought Sandesh to the University of New Hampshire, where he began his PhD and started following another iconic species, 'Moooooose'. He traded snow leopards for moose, but not the wildlife, mountains, and forests. Currently, he is studying moose where he uses acoustic techniques to explore their vocal behavior and habitat use patterns.
About Megan Graham:
Megan is a graduate student at the University of New Hampshire studying how we can use acoustic methods to monitor bat populations. Originally from Connecticut, she graduated from the University of Connecticut with a Bachelor’s degree in natural resources and the environment in 2023. After graduation, she worked with the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection to assist with different wildlife research projects involving black bears, fishers, bobcats, but spent the most time working with bats! She joined UNH in 2025 to further this interest and develop new acoustic strategies to further bat conservation.
