Trees covered in snow

Fun Outdoors with Trees in Winter!

At first glance, winter trees can seem quiet and still—but look a little closer and you’ll find a lot of activity. Buds are forming for spring, seeds are drifting across the snow, and evergreens are hard at work surviving the cold. March is the perfect time to slow down, look closely, and discover the hidden stories of the trees around you.

The Newfound Lake Region Association invites families, kids, and curious explorers of all ages to head outside and explore the winter lives of trees during our March Nature Challenge.

Choose one (or more!) of the activities below to try at home or in your neighborhood. Explore, observe, create, and then let us know what you discovered!

March Nature Challenge activities:

  • Get up close with evergreen needles and make an Evergreen Press Pendant. (Need air dry clay? Stop by Grey Rocks Conservation Center, Monday–Friday, 9am–4pm.)
  • Go on a Trees in Winter scavenger hunt.
  • Act out the different parts of a tree with a Tree Dance.
  • Decorate a tree in all seasons.
  • Take a walk and see if you can find some tree seeds on top of the snow (hint: gray and yellow birches are busy this time of year!)

Along the way, you can also learn more about how plants survive the winter and how seeds travel to new places to grow—something that’s happening all around us right now.

Share your discoveries with us on Facebook (@NewfoundLake), on Instagram (@newfoundlakeassoc), or email your photos and stories to mirka@newfoundlake.org. We can’t wait to see how you explore winter!
