Your experience begins aboard the NLRA pontoon boat as we collect live plankton using a fine-mesh net. Back at the lab, you'll examine these remarkable microscopic organisms under powerful microscopes, revealing an astonishing world of intricate shapes, delicate symmetry, and mesmerizing movement that is normally invisible to the naked eye. After observing and sketching your favorite specimens, you'll use them as inspiration for your artwork.
In the studio, you'll transform your discoveries into colorful monoprints. Learn printmaking techniques by carving plankton-inspired designs into foam plates, rolling water-soluble ink with brayers, and layering your prints over vibrant painted backgrounds. Experiment with multiple plankton forms and ink colors to create a one-of-a-kind work of art that celebrates the incredible diversity of life found in Newfound Lake.
