Conservation TipsNews and Updates

We are thrilled to once again welcome AmeriCorps members to the watershed this season to serve as NLRA's Watershed Stewards.

This year's arrival is especially meaningful. Since 2019, AmeriCorps members have played an essential role in protecting the Newfound Watershed, contributing thousands of hours to conservation projects, environmental education, stormwater management, and invasive species prevention. Last year, the abrupt termination of funding for many AmeriCorps programs nationwide brought uncertainty to communities across the country, including Newfound. Thanks to the restoration of the program and the continued commitment of conservation partners, we are excited to once again host Watershed Stewards and benefit from their service.

Serving from May through October, Watershed Stewards provide hands-on conservation support that expands our capacity to protect the Newfound Watershed. Through education, monitoring, restoration, and community outreach, they help advance projects that safeguard the exceptional water quality and natural resources that make Newfound Lake so special.

Join us in welcoming Marjorie, Helen, and Loretta! In just a few short weeks, they have already made a meaningful impact in protecting and preserving Newfound Lake. Here are just a few of the projects they've helped advance:

  • Collected plankton and water samples that provide critical data on lake health and help guide conservation priorities.
  • Installed stormwater management practices that reduce pollution before it reaches Newfound Lake.
  • Supported environmental education programs that connect local students with the natural world.
  • Assisted with fieldwork and monitoring efforts that help us better understand and protect watershed ecosystems.

Throughout the summer, you'll see them working across the watershed leading educational programs, helping prevent stormwater pollution, monitoring for invasive species, assisting with research efforts, and engaging with residents and visitors at community events.

Their service strengthens our ability to protect the Newfound Watershed today while helping inspire the next generation of conservation leaders. We are grateful for their commitment to environmental stewardship and look forward to the many ways they will contribute to our mission in the months ahead. Please join us in welcoming them to the Newfound community when you see them out in the field this summer!
